Key Points:

  • Bayer Leverkusen had no answer for Atalanta's attacking prowess in the first half.

DUBLIN, Ireland (Reuters) - Ademola Lookman scored a stunning hat-trick as Atalanta Bergamo defeated Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 to win the 2024 Europa League final.

Leverkusen's unbeaten run of 51 games came to an end in disappointing fashion as Atalanta dominated the match from the opening whistle. Lookman opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a clinical finish from inside the area.

The Nigerian forward doubled Atalanta's lead in the 25th minute with a powerful header from a corner kick. Leverkusen had no answer for Atalanta's attacking prowess in the first half and went into the break 2-0 down.

Lookman completed his hat-trick in the 55th minute with another well-taken goal. The 26-year-old has now scored 15 goals in the Europa League this season, making him the competition's top scorer.

Leverkusen never really threatened to get back into the game and Atalanta comfortably saw out the victory to claim their first major European trophy.
